Funding Strategies for LSS programs

Hello Teachers, Schools, Centers, Parents, PTOs, After-School programs, Administrators and more in Western NC! We want to do all we can to HELP YOU get LEAF in Schools & Streets (LSS) programs to YOU and the youth and more you SERVE! Below are some funding resources that you can utilize to help fund our programs. If you know of more resources, please let us know – we want to make sure we are giving access to you & giving you all you need to bring high-quality, arts in education programming to our community.

Asheville City School District Grants
Asheville City Schools Foundation:
Project Grants
Project grants are awarded to implement projects that fit in one of these four areas: Innovation, Arts Education, Energy Education and Conservation, and Closing the Achievement Gap.
GRANT AMOUNT: $200-$5000
ELIGIBILITY: Primary applicant must be Asheville City Schools Employees, but parents, family members and community members are encouraged to partner with teachers and staff in creating these projects.
TIMELINE:
Grant writing workshop: late April
Pre-proposal: mid-May
Invited proposals: mid-June
Present to Allocations Committee: mid-June
Notification sent: end of June
Funding for the upcoming school year – August-June

Micro Grants
Progress Energy Micro-Grants allow educators to apply for small amounts as needed during the school year to supplement their activities. Requests might include supplemental classroom materials, stipends for visiting speakers, etc. Priority is given to purchases that may be re-used from year to year.  
GRANT AMOUNT: up to $200
ELIGIBILITY: The grant applicant must be an employee of the Asheville City Schools System.
TIMELINE: Micro grants are given out 2-3x throughout the school-year. (Check with ACSF for dates soon).

Foundation Innovator Fellows Program
This program is funded by the Z. Smith Reynolds and is a two-year opportunity for Asheville City schools’ teachers to hone their research skills. Teachers will seek professional development opportunities, design a project, evaluate its success and share the results with other fellows and the community. Possible component of this project: Arts Integration - Bring an artist to your classroom or school to learn about how to create arts-integrated units of study.  Develop units that enhance your teaching of the Standard Course of Study with the teaching artist and study the impact on student learning.
GRANT AMOUNT: $500-$5000 ($70,000 total amount granted over 2yrs for 2009-2011)
ELIGIBILITY: The grant applicant must be a teacher and in a school that has a high percentage of students living in poverty within the Asheville City Schools System. Priority will be given to teachers with 3-15 years of teaching experience.  Fellows must be recommended by their principals.

Buncombe County Schools District Grants
Buncombe County Schools Foundation:
Progress Energy Classroom Mini Grant
This program is designed to support INNOVATIVE and CREATIVE classroom projects related only to energy education. These grants can be utilized through arts education programs. These programs should benefit a large number of students, should meet curricular goals, and should be UNIQUE and CREATIVE. Additional information about possible programs can be found at www.need.org. Possible Areas for Funding:
Programs that address issues related to energy education such as but not limited to Energy Around the World, Building Buddies, The Great Energy Debate Game, and Today in Energy.
Programs that are ongoing – ones where the materials will be used more than once.

Teacher Grant
The Buncombe County Schools Foundation is pleased to present its scholarship and mini-grant programs for the school year thanks to Progress Energy, the WNC Community Foundation and Buncombe County Schools Foundation. Classroom grants totaling $23,000 will be distributed. This Teacher Grant program is designed to support innovative and creative classroom instructional programs that are directly supported by the NC Standard Course of Study. Possible areas for funding:
Programs that address basic skill development aligned with the SCOS Goals and Objectives.
Programs that are on-going – ones where the materials will be used more than once.
Technology projects that raise students experience with technology and/or increase their academic performance.
Programs that benefit a large number of students.
Programs that are unique, innovative, and creative.
GRANT AMOUNT: up to $500 (total funded $4,000)

Community Grants
Asheville Area Arts Council
The Asheville Area Arts Council (AAAC), Arts in Education program, is a partner in the LEAF in Schools & Streets collaboration and has an Artist Residency Grant Program to which schools can apply for funding.  Artists funded by the AAAC MUST be listed in the AAAC Artist Directory.

Target Field Trip Grants

Hello LEAF in Schools & Streets Program Coordinators & Teachers!
Here is your basic information relevant to your school or organization’s participation in the upcoming LEAF in Schools & Streets program.  

COORDINATOR CHECKLIST
  1. _________READ PARENT INFO SHEET so you are aware of the check-in procedures, etc.
  2. _________ PARENT PACKETS to be COPIED and sent home with students: Send home PARENT INFO SHEET, PERMISSION SLIP, & PARKING TAG. (If anyone forgets their PARKING TAG, or there isn’t enough in your packet, they can get one at the Drive-Thru check-in and they will refer to approved list of LSS participants).
  3. _________Collect permission slips ASAP – email or call in the names for participants coming to LEAF. Permission slips can be mailed or brought to the festival on the day of their performance. ALL YOUTH must have a signed permission slip to be able to participate at LEAF.
  4. _________Parents and/or school/organization provides transportation to and from LEAF.
  5. _________Arrive at LEAF 2hrs before the performance at check-in. All parents/family members must check –in BEFORE their child’s performance. CHECK-IN closes at 3pm, there will be no admission after this time.
  6. _________Each group has up to 8 staff/chaperones that can come to the festival for FREE to provide support for your students. Each youth performer has up to 2 family members that can come to see their child perform for FREE.
  7. _________Complete survey after the performance with volunteers.

Parents

Parents play an important role in the LSS program. We invite you to see your child PERFORM on stage, GROW with your child through the experience, and ENJOY a day of adventure at LEAF. LSS wants you to be part of the process and welcome any inquiries or feedback about the program.

Please note that in order for your child to participate in the PERFORMANCE or PRESENTATION at LEAF, the parent(s)/guardian(s) MUST return the LSS permission form (link to pdf form). Parent(s)/guardian(s) are also responsible for transporting and chaperoning the student to the festival, if not otherwise arranged by the participating school or organization. Thank YOU for making the ARTS a priority in your child’s education!

Here is your basic information relevant to your child’s participation in the upcoming LEAF in Schools & Streets program.  This is YOUR INVITATION to come see your child perform at Lake Eden Arts Festival (LEAF) and experience a day of adventure at LEAF.   Below are the details of bringing your child to LEAF!

• LEAF participation permission slips are sent home with your child (included in this packet). Please sign & return so that your child will be allowed to perform at LEAF. VERY IMPORTANT: turn in ASAP!

• Each student participating may bring TWO family members as guests for FREE.  Family members MUST check in BEFORE their child’s performance. CHECK-IN closes at 3pmno admission will be made after that time. Siblings under 10yrs old are FREE and are not counted as a guest.


AFTER YOUR PERFORMANCE – SURVEYS & PRIZE BAGS!!!
SURVEYS - After your performance volunteers will arrive to do a survey with youth participants, parents, teachers/coordinators & artists. YOUR FEEDBACK is CRUCIAL to help us to fund and continue our programming. In exchange for completing a survey, youth receive a prize bag! If you miss our volunteers, please visit the LSS Raffle Tent – LSS Hospitality in the Outreach Village (next to Lakeside stage), to fill out the survey.

DIRECTIONS
  • From West:  1-40 to Swannanoa Exit 59. Left at end of ramp. Right at light onto US 70. Left at next light, cross small bridge, right at yield onto Old US70.  Right into Owen Pool Parking lot.
  • From East:  I-40 to 1st Black Mountain Exit #65. Exit merges to Hwy. 70. 3.5 miles, pass lots of small businesses, Marine Boats & see large Ingles Warehouse on left. Right at traffic light onto Grovestone Road. Left at next light onto Old US 70. Just past the 1st light, left into Owen Pool parking lot.

PARKING & CHECK-IN INFORMATION FOR YOUTH PERFORMING @ LEAF

  • ARRIVE 2hrs PRIOR to your performance time and come to the Drive-Thru check in offsite at the Owen Pool Lot just before (or past if coming from east) you get to Lake Eden Road at 117 Stone Drive Swannanoa, NC.  This allows for plenty of time to arrive, park and check-in! Check-in is available 8am-3pm.  You will then be directed to park at Owen Middle School.  Please note that shuttles do not start till 9am.
  • FREE parking at Owen Middle School, 730 Old US 70 Highway, Swannanoa, NC is provided with a parking pass. No parking pass? Please tell Owen Middle School parking staff you are with LSS and the SCHOOL or ORGANIZATION you are coming with to LEAF. They will refer to an approved list of LSS participants for the festival.   
  • LSS CHECK-IN LOCATION in front of Owen Middle School, near school entrance.
  • Check in under the name of your SCHOOL or ORGANIZATION.
  • Performing youth each receive a day wristband pass for LEAF on the day of their performance, LSS performer badge, t-shirt & button at check-in. T-shirts should be worn during youths’ performance (unless other arrangements have been made).
  • Performing youth family member guests and staff/chaperones of a partner organization receive a day wristband pass for LEAF on the day of their child’s performance. Parents/Guardians must check-in BEFORE their child’s performance. Check in closes at 4pm – no admission will be made after that time.
  • Take the FREE shuttle from Owen Middle School into the festival grounds. Shuttles do not start till 9am.
  • Arrive at your performance venue at LEAST 20-30min. BEFORE your performance time.
  • In order for your child to participate in a performance/presentation at Lake Eden Arts Festival, the parents/guardian and/or staff of a partner organization must turn in the permission slip. The parent/guardian and/or staff of a partner organization are responsible for transporting and chaperoning the student to, from and during the festival.

  • Youth may have up to 2 family member guests and up to 8 staff/chaperones from the partner organization receive a day wristband pass for LEAF on the day of their field trip – either Saturday or Sunday.
  • Take the FREE shuttle from Owen Middle School into the festival grounds.
  • In order for your child to come to the Lake Eden Arts Festival, the parents/guardian and/or staff of a partner organization must turn in the permission slip ASAP. The parent/guardian and/or staff of a partner organization are responsible for transporting and chaperoning the student to, from and during the festival.

LEAF Field Trip

We welcome field trips to LEAF through LSS on a case-by-case approval basis. Field trips are utilized for youth that are NOT performing at LEAF with programs or organizations aimed to reach underserved youth. We ask all participants to fill out a Cultural Passport (available at check-in) and turn in BEFORE YOU LEAVE the festival. Cultural Passports are designed to make learning about our World through music and arts FUN. After you fill out your CULTURAL PASSPORT please visit the LSS Raffle Tent – LSS Hospitality in the Outreach Village (next to Lakeside stage), to fill out the survey. YOUR FEEDBACK is CRUCIAL to help us fund and continue our programming.

Explore LEAF

In addition to LEAF in Schools & Streets (LSS) community arts-in-education programs at various schools and centers, LSS also provides an opportunity for youth to perform at LEAF. Performing artists collaborate with youth to perform on a national stage with their parents & more in the audience. Youth report a variety of responses including INCREASED SELF-ESTEEM, exposure to ETHNICITY & CULTURAL AWARENESS, CONFIDENCE and a sense of GLOBAL COMMUNITY.


LEAF Outreach Village

LEAF aims to educate guests at about its arts-in-education programs for youth & more, LOCALLY with LEAF in Schools & Streets & GLOBALLY with LEAF International. Learn more about our outreach efforts at the OUTREACH TENT near Lakeside mainstage at LEAF.

  • LEAF MEMBERSHIP: Support LEAF’s arts education outreach programs with your donation while also getting special privileges as a MEMBER.
  • LSS RAFFLE: Buy raffle tickets and support LSS! You can win AMAZING items from LEAF artists & more! Most all our art vendors at LEAF generously donate to our raffle – we LOVE our VENDORS!
  • LSS HOSPITALITY & SURVEYS: LSS youth performing participants, coordinators, teachers & parents fill out surveys. In return for filled out surveys, youth participants receive goodie-bags. You can also find out more information about LSS at the festival and how your school, group or organization can get involved in our programs.
  • LEAF INTERNATIONAL (LI): Global Goodness merchandise for sale & more.
  • LI PEN PAL STATION: Youth invited to write to a NEW friend across the globe in the 6 countries we have LI programs.
  • LSS PERFORMANCES: Look on the schedule for LSS- LEAF in Schools & Streets.  This tells you when and where you can check out young people performing on stage!  Dance, Music, Poetry!
  • EXPANDED!! LEAFlet Kid’s Village:  In May 2010 we moved this popular area for families to a BIGGER location @ LEAF near the tennis courts. FREE Activities! Instrument Petting Zoo, Face Painting, Storytelling, Dress-up with fun costumes, Adventure Zone, Games and more!
  • WATERFRONT: Free swimming (be sure to bring a change of clothes/towel)! Canoeing, kayaking, and a zip-line, for a small fee!
  • FOOD: available for purchase from vendors (unless other arrangements have been made).
  • MEET & GREET OPPORTUNITIES with Artists: Worldwide Kids Tent/LEAFlet Kids Village – check LEAF Festival Schedule for times.
  • LEAF SURVEY: Give us your feedback by filling out the survey in the festival program guide at the Outreach Tent/Members’ section in LEAF Outreach Village and receive a FREE LEAF bumper sticker.
  • INTERACTIVE PHOTO BOOTH: Celebrate & document your LEAF experience by dressing up with friends and family in ZANY costumes and receiving photographs! BRIGHT LIFE PHOTOGRAPHY operates the photo booth and gives partial proceeds to LSS.
